Interior Design Cost in Dubai 2026: A Transparent Breakdown

One of the most common questions I receive from clients, whether they are a Jordanian family relocating to Dubai, a European expat renting their first villa, or a UAE national building in Abu Dhabi, is some version of: how much does interior design actually cost here? The honest answer is: it depends on far more than you would expect.

The Three Layers of Design Cost

Interior design in Dubai typically involves three distinct financial layers that clients often confuse: the design fee, the furniture and materials budget, and the fit-out or contractor cost. Understanding how they relate is critical before you start any project.

Design fees in Dubai range from AED 150 to 600 per square metre depending on the scope and the studio you are working with. That fee covers everything from concept development and mood boards to floor plans, material specifications, and contractor-ready documentation. It does not include what you spend on materials, furniture, or labour.

"The most expensive mistake clients make is starting with a contractor before they have a design. You cannot price what is not specified."

What Does a Typical Dubai Apartment Project Cost?

For a mid-range one-bedroom apartment, roughly 70 to 90 sqm, in an area like JVC or Business Bay, a realistic full project budget combining design fee, furniture, and contractor fit-out falls between AED 80,000 and AED 150,000. That is approximately $22,000 to $41,000 USD.

A luxury villa in Emirates Hills or Palm Jumeirah is a different world entirely. Fit-out costs alone for high-specification spaces can reach AED 1,500 to 3,000 per sqm, and bespoke joinery and imported Italian stone can double that figure.

Entry, Standard and Premium

At the entry level, a professional designer can help you with space planning, a curated moodboard, and a colour and material palette for a few thousand dirhams. A standard residential package typically costs between AED 25,000 and 75,000. Premium projects involving architecture and BIM coordination are priced per project. Small Apartment Design in Dubai: Making Every Square Foot Feel Generous

Dubai's apartment market has evolved dramatically. A decade ago, most buyers prioritised size above everything. Today, smaller, smarter apartments in well-designed buildings are commanding premium prices because good interior design has become understood as infrastructure, not decoration.

Light is Space

The single most effective intervention in a small apartment is not a storage solution or a fold-away bed. It is light. Natural light, amplified by the right paint colour, mirrored or reflective surfaces placed opposite windows, and sheer curtains that maintain privacy while allowing light to pass through. A dark apartment feels small even at 100 sqm. A well-lit studio can feel expansive.

"Storage is not an afterthought. In small apartments, it is the architecture."

The Furniture Selection Principle

Every piece of furniture in a small apartment must earn its place. We use two tests: first, does it serve at least two functions? A storage ottoman replaces both a coffee table and a linen chest. Second, is its visual weight appropriate? Light-legged, open-based furniture reads as less space-consuming than heavy, solid pieces.

Built-In Joinery Changes Everything

Floor-to-ceiling joinery accomplishes two things simultaneously: it maximises storage and draws the eye upward, making ceilings feel higher. In Dubai, where apartments rarely have the natural material richness of older European buildings, bespoke joinery is often the primary design element that elevates a space from generic to considered.

Material Strategy

In small apartments, we tend to use one primary material palette throughout. Consistent flooring that runs from the entrance through to the bedroom creates the illusion of more floor area. Zones can be defined through furniture arrangement, rugs, and lighting levels rather than material changes.

How BIM Improves Residential Projects and Why It is No Longer Only for Large Developers

Building Information Modelling has been standard practice in large commercial and infrastructure projects for years. What has changed recently is its accessibility for residential and medium-scale commercial projects, which is where most of our clients' projects fall.

What BIM Actually Is

BIM is not simply 3D modelling. It is a collaborative process in which the architectural, structural, and MEP systems of a building are modelled within a single shared digital environment. Each discipline works in the same model, which means clashes are caught in the model, not on-site during construction.

The model also contains data: every element has associated information including material specifications, supplier details, cost data, and installation sequencing. This turns the model into a living document that governs the project from design through to facility management.

"One resolved clash in a BIM model saves approximately ten times its cost in on-site rectification. At scale, the maths become compelling."

When Is BIM Worth It for Residential?

For a standard apartment interior design project, BIM adds cost without proportionate benefit. For a new-build villa above approximately 400 sqm, or any project where multiple consultants are working simultaneously, BIM coordination pays for itself reliably. For restaurants and hospitality projects, where kitchen design, MEP, and interior design must coexist in complex ways, BIM is almost always worthwhile.

Our studio offers BIM coordination as part of our Premium service tier. If you are unsure whether your project warrants it, that is exactly the kind of question we address in our first consultation.

East Meets West: How European and GCC Design Sensibilities Differ and What Happens When They Meet

I was trained in architecture in Europe. I grew up between Amman and Budapest. I now work primarily in Dubai. This biography is not incidental to how I design. It is central to it. Over the years, I have noticed that the differences between European and Gulf design sensibilities are real, meaningful, and more interesting than most cross-cultural design conversations acknowledge.

The European Tradition: Restraint as Sophistication

Contemporary European interior design is defined by restraint. The aesthetic vocabulary of Scandinavian minimalism, the honest materiality of the Swiss and German traditions, the quiet luxury of French interiors: all of them share a preference for understatement. Quality is expressed through the grain of a timber, the weight of a door handle, the precision of a joint.

A small, perfectly proportioned room in a Parisian apartment can feel more luxurious than a vast, poorly considered space. Light is used carefully because natural light in Northern Europe is a precious resource.

"The most interesting spaces happen when neither tradition dominates. When European precision meets Gulf generosity, you get something genuinely new."

The Gulf Sensibility: Abundance as Hospitality

Gulf design has its own deeply rooted logic that is frequently misunderstood by designers trained exclusively in a European tradition. Scale matters in Gulf interiors not as a display of excess but as an expression of hospitality. A generous majlis, a grand entrance, a dining room that can accommodate an extended family: these are not aesthetic choices, they are social ones.

The Dubai Exception

Dubai is, in design terms, its own category. It is a city built in a generation, attracting designers, clients, and materials from everywhere simultaneously. The result is an extraordinary creative permission. You can work across traditions because the city has no single dominant tradition yet.

What I Have Learned

The most durable design principle I have arrived at from working across these contexts is this: every space has a primary user culture, and that culture should set the spatial logic, even if other cultural traditions inform the aesthetics. A Dubai villa for a Gulf family should feel generous and welcoming. A Budapest apartment for a European couple should feel precise and intimate. Architecture is most powerful when it amplifies rather than contradicts the life it houses.
